DescriptionWorn unbelted over a matching kimono, this kind of formal outer garment (uchikake) is still part of traditional wedding attire in Japan. In a commercial practice begun as early as the mid-17th century, clients perused pattern books and fashion magazines before settling on a color scheme and design appropriate to the season and occasion. In this example, white, the color associated with beginnings, is combined with cranes, pine trees; and plum blossoms, traditional symbols of longevity and prosperity.
