DescriptionHorizontally-oriented, nearly square dimensions, landscape painting showing a close view of the nose of Mount Mansfield, in Vermont. There is a low horizon line that divides the painting into two registers. In the foreground, there is a stand of forest trees, a path, and a large rock or boulder. Small horizontal brushstrokes are used to describe the terrain. In the middle and upper left side of the painting there is a bright blue sky with clusters of white clouds. In the middle and upper right side of the painting there is a rocky mountain; tawny browns, purples, dark blues, and dark greens are used to described the surface texture of the mountain. Color and brushwork indicate the play of light and shadow across the land.
