DescriptionOil on canvas portrait of A.L. Catlin, the first mayor of Burlington, Vermont after incorporation; because the artist, Frederick Fink, died in 1849 and A.L. Catlin did not become mayor of Burlington until after 1865, the portrait of Catlin was most likely done when he was a younger man; the portrait shows Catlin in a frontal view as a ruddied complected man with hazel eyes, black hair, and "mutton chop" side burns; a white shirt collar peaks from behind a high black cravat; Catlin is wearing a high necked black waist coat together with a white shirt and pearl stick pin; his left arm crosses his body and is holding a gold watch fob; he appears to be sitting erect in a red chair with a muted black/brown background
