Description"489" is printed on the photo. On the mount is hand written "Woanga Pipe Stem, Otes" and below Otes is printed "Dakota." In the supplement to volume 19 of Edward S. Curtis' "The North American Indian," the Otoes are described as belonging to the Dakota linguistic family. The Jackson Catalogue states that the Otoes eventually migrated to the Missouri with the Winnebagoes. The mount of the photo is smudged and there is a pencil or ink mark on the photo itself, near the subject.
