Pierce, Company F., 18th regiment Infantry, Connecticut Volunteers, who enlisted at 56 years old and was captured a year later at The Second Battle of Winchester in Virginia; his Great-Great Grandfather and Martin’s son 1st Sgt. Edwin M. Pierce, Co. C, 1st Regiment Cavalry, Connecticut Volunteers*; and Edwin’s 3 brothers: John W. Pierce also 1st Regiment Cavalry and John’s twin Jeremiah H. Pierce, Co. F., 8th Regiment Infantry, Connecticut Volunteers; and, Alonzo Southwick Pierce, Company H., 5th Regiment Infantry, Connecticut Volunteer who died in the war at the age of 20 years old at Camp Huntington near Frederick City, MD. *The Connecticut 1st regiment Cavalry was rewarded for its extreme valor by escorting General Grant when he went to receive Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House April, 1865.
