DescriptionMembranophone. Made from a solid piece of wood. A thick membrane covers the open end. The membrane is secured by a weave of leather straps (tied to the membrane and secured on the underside of the drum). There are eight wooden cylinders placed in between the leather straps to tighten the drum head. The gab is the rubbery part on the drum head, and is made of boiled rice and various powders. The gab enables players to produce a variety of different sounds on the drum. Tabla is often paired with the bayan drum in most musical settings. The tabla is very similar to 1898.1.343, but is larger.
