DescriptionChinese official's rank badge, or so-called "mandarin square". Typically worn in pairs on the front and back of the outer coat (p"u-fu) for formal court dress. Central motif of a bird with an open beak and outstretched wings standing on one leg. Design is executed in knotted and couched embroidery stitches. Background design of clouds, sun, sky and water on a black silk ground. The badge is lined with turquoise silk. Bird motifs denote 9 ranks of civilian officials; military officers have animal motifs.On View
