DescriptionChinese civilian official's rank badge, or so-called "mandarin square". Typically worn in pairs (see identical #1981.9.29) on the front/back of the outer robe/coat (p'u-fu). Design of bird amidst a stylized background of clouds, sunny sky and water. Woven in Chinese silk tapestry weave (kesi). Bird motif denotes one of nine ranks of civilian government officials as opposed to military (animal motifs). This badge is lined in blue silk taffeta, innerlining of ecru silk and/or cotton. Separately woven and attached border of interlocking swastika design. Bird drawn in blue ink/paint. Same as 1981.9.29, but not as worn.On View
